I’m still geeking out about this fascinating episode on ‘the forgotten ion.’ Here’s a surprising insight:
Preliminary findings suggest that hyperchloraemia might not only contribute to low blood pressure but could also make it harder to manage.
For instance, in critically ill patients with blood pressure challenges, like those with sepsis who require pressors, elevated chloride levels might complicate blood pressure control.
One potential solution? Choosing the right IV fluids to help manage chloride levels could make stabilizing blood pressure a bit easier.
Note: These findings are still preliminary, so this isn’t a confirmed theory yet. That said, aiming to normalize chloride levels is unlikely to cause harm.
